Tesla's "D": The Possibilities...and then some

Elon Musk, the undeniable king of the electric car industry and overall “G”, tweeted a mysterious photo earlier today with the following statement, “About time to unveil the D and something else”. Elon Musk wants to show us his “D”. Now that I have gotten that out of my system, let us get a little more serious. What could this “D” in fact be, and also what is the “something else”?

Let us start with the “something else”. Tesla has stated that there new wallet friendly model will be called the “Model 3”. Since we haven’t actually gotten an official reveal, yet, it would make sense that this “something else” is the Model 3. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Model 3, it is Tesla’s answer to the BMW 3-series and all of its rivals. It is supposedly going to start at around $35,000, with around a 150-200 mile range. This is one possibility. The other possibility is an announcement for the production of the Model X SUV. People have been waiting over 2 years for the X, so it would also be no surprise if Tesla announced production next week to ease tension.

Now for the “D” part. The possibilities are endless. It could be a new model, a new sub-brand, new service, or something completely new and indefinable. In my honest opinion, it could be one of the following three things. The “D” could stand for dual motor or 4WD. Like BMW X-Drive, Audi Quattro, and Mercedes 4-Matic, Tesla maybe announcing their entry into the AWD car sector, with possibly an AWD Tesla Model S-D.

My second possibility for this “D” is Tesla announcing a sport/racing sub-brand; personally I think this is it judging by the teaser image. BMW, Audi, and Benz, all of which are Tesla’s main rivals, all are have a sport sub-brand for racing. BMW has M, Audi has Quattro GMBH, and Benz has AMG. All of these sub-brands are involved in motorsports, as well as offer customers unique and sportier versions of their everyday lineup. If Tesla would like to gain even more momentum and fanfare, which never hurts, it would not be unusual for them to unveil a sport sub-brand. I’m assuming the “D” stands for “Dynamic”.

My third and final possibility for this “D” is a totally brand new model. The Tesla Model D, I guess. It could either be a van type or a wagon/estate car. The reason I believe this is because these two vehicles have D-pillars. For those of you who do not know what a pillar is in “car speak”, it’s basically the stands of the roof. The one closest to the front is called the A-pillar; next one is B-pillar, and so on. The Model-S and Model-X go up to be C-pillar, a van or wagon/estate would go up to D-pillar. On the surface, it would make some sense for Tesla to go into the van market because it’s a pretty hot market. But, I really doubt that they will because then they would have to go against Honda and Toyota, who have the market captured right now. Plus, prices are super low, which means lower margins, something that Tesla does not need. But, Tesla is an innovative company, with a brilliant CEO.

Anyhow, these are just my predictions. I’m not saying I know what is going to happen, but being a car guy these 3 things are the most likely possibilities. We will all know what Tesla’s “D” and something else is next week, October 9th. As always, we will be covering the announcements, so check back next week for a detailed summary.
