Engines are a wonderful thing. They take fuel and turn it into forward motion. They do this by creating millions of explosions, and harnessing the forces created. And they do this with ever varying conditions, like different fuel mixture, different displacements, different aspiration methods, etc...
As you may have figured out, we here at OhSoLofty are quite fond of engines. This is why my fellow writer Jack Lavish and I have decided to go through the thousands of engines out there in the world and create a list of the best sounding ones. And to keep things simple, these lists will be separated by engine type. There will also be a video accompanying these list to keep things nice and classy.
The subject of this list is the all mighty 8-Cylinder motor. 8-Cylinders are considered by many to be the best number of cylinders for internal combustion motors. Characteristically, 8 bangers have a distinct grumble, which can be heard at any rev range. 8-cylinders power trucks, SUVs, luxury sedans, compacts, and even the hypercars of today. There are many great 8-cylinder motors out there, which made creating this list quite a challenge. Luckily, we (OSL) have conducted hours of grueling research to find the best of the best. With that said, lets start this list off with the…
The original Ford GT, which debuted in 2005, is an American Legend. Though it fell short at being a useable supercar, as it was as wide as a bus, had dreadful fuel economy, and a zippo for a gas tank, the Ford GT still succeeded in showcasing the power emotion that a proper V8 could achieve. The 5.4L supercharged V8 that rested in the rear of the GT packed a healthy 550hp and 500 lb/ft of torque. The supercharged motor gave the GT a signature growl and hiss that other supercharged motors just do not have.
Ferrari F430 Scuderia
The F430 Scuderia might not be the last naturally aspirated Ferrari V8, however to many it is one of the best sounding. The 4.3L naturally aspirated V8 produces a lofty 503hp at redline! Also, Ferrari fitted a valve exhaust system, which adjusts the valve position at various RPMs. This give the F430 Scuderia a very distinct sound during acceleration.
Volkswagen Passat W8
Why is there a Passat on this list, you may ask? Well for one, Passat’s are actually nice cars. And two, this Passat packs a very unique engine; a W8. Instead of having the cylinders in a V-configuration, a W8 has the cylinders in a W-configuration. Not only does this reduce the footprint of the motor, but also changes the sound that is produced.
BMW M3 E92
The e92 M3 to many is the best M3 ever created. With it’s 4.0L, naturally aspirated, high-revving, sexy looking V8, the e92 captured hearts world wide with it’s glorious sounds. The high-revving nature of the motor creates a very unique, higher pitched V8 note.
Jaguar F-Type R
The F-Type R is considered by many to be the best sounding V8 car one can buy today. The 5.0L supercharged V8 gives the F-Type a very brutal, raspy voice, kind of like Otis Redding with a chainsaw. Aggressive and scary, but soulful and appealing at the same time.
Christian Von Koenigsegg is a mad genius and an inspiration for young engineers like myself. He thinks of ideas that many would deem stupid, and turns them into reality. This intern causes those who doubted to eat their words. The CCXR packs a V8 with not 1 but 2 superchargers. 10 years ago, people would’ve have considered a man crazy for thinking of such an idea, let alone actually attempt to make it a reality. Luckily for us, Mr. Koenigsegg didn’t let the doubters get to him. The CCXR with it’s 1000hp twin-supercharged V8 has the voice of an angel from hell. It doesn’t gradually build up to a crescendo, instead jumps straight to and past it. One listen, and your life will be changed.
