Mazda MX-5: The Essence of a Sports Car

Cars are very unique, able to stimulate senses at the push of a pedal, howling with noise and passion unrivaled. There are few other machines out there that can capture the attention of people with a glance of its sleek body work and complex engineering. However, this has created a problem within the automotive industry. Attention is being drawn towards the hypercars, spaceships of the road. These million dollar works of art, use their hand crafted engines to propel the lucky towards the horizon, and out of reach of the average person. Cars should not be judged by their price tag, power output or prestige of badge. They should be judged on their purity, their simplicity, and their accessibility. With these guidelines, one car immediately comes to mind of any automotive enthusiast. The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

The Miata, born from the advice of an automotive journalist, is the pure essence of a sports car. It is not the most powerful (155 hp), or most exclusive (over 1,000,000 produced). It does not need to compete with the hypercar, and with a 5.8 second 0-60 time, I wouldn't expect it. What it does however, is take you back to the roots of how amazing a simple car can be. The culture of the Miata is impossible to explain in one review, but put simply, it is one of the most modified cars on earth due to its low initial cost and simplicity.

I was given the opportunity to drive a Miata Grand Touring, a fully loaded version of the Miata, through my local town. Driving the vehicle is a delight, its engine giving plenty of power to handle a daily commute, and being comfortable enough to deal with the poorly paved roads it was tasked with managing. It drew looks as it drove along the road, the sculpted lines drawing plenty of attention from those walking down the street. Upon leaving the built up area of Iowa City, however, is when the Miata began to shine. Along the curving roads on the outskirts of the city, it was a treat, allowing me to carve them while enjoying the crisp sound from the Bose headrest speakers.

This short drive reminded me of the delight of the pure and simple, the amazingly simple legend that is the MX-5. I will always have a love for the beasts, the Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Mclarens and countless others. However, as a tool able to put a smile on the face of the masses for its pure driving pleasure, no modern car can rival it.
